You are inside the cell body of a neuron.

Turn your phone sideways for a better view.

Prot− negatively charged proteins K+ potassium ions Na+ sodium ions Cl− chloride ions

Drag inside the neuron to move, or use the arrow keys.

The inside of a neuron is negative compared with the outside. Open a sodium channel and the inside becomes a little less negative, right where the channel opened. Small, local changes like this one are the beginning of every signal a neuron sends.
